Most arguments about how to make AI safe are happening in a handful of cities, among people working on systems built in those same cities. The Philippines does not build frontier models, but we use them, and whatever goes wrong with them will reach us through the apps and services we already depend on, usually without anyone here having had a say in how they were made. Safe AI Philippines is hosting two sessions this October to work out what a country in that position can actually do, and we would love for you to join us.
Tuesday, October 13, 4 to 7 pm Incidents to interventions: Frontier AI safety research and lessons for non-frontier resilience-building
David Demitri Africa, a research scientist at Resolution who previously worked at the UK AI Security Institute, will walk us through recent AI safety incidents (e.g. Hugging Face) and what technical safety research looks like from the inside. In the second half, attendees will work through which interventions could protect a consumer state like the Philippines when a major incident starts elsewhere and its effects arrive here.
Monday, October 19, 6 to 8 pm Should the world pause the most powerful AI? A working session for Filipino organizers and thinkers
As worry about AGI and superintelligence spreads, calls to slow the development of the most powerful AI systems have grown louder, but very few of the voices making or answering those calls come from Asia. This session asks what that debate would look like in a country where nobody works at the labs that would be paused, but plenty of people already use what they make. It also asks what local organizing around the question would need in order to be grounded in how Filipinos actually live and work, and whether such a group should exist here at all. PauseAI'sIrina Tavera is joining us to host. The second half of the session is an open dialogue with attendees.
Both sessions are hybrid, and the onsite venue is at Sevenspace Co-working on Maginhawa St., Quezon City. If you can come in person to both, I would recommend it! Also, there is no fee to attend and we will be providing food for everyone. We would love to have you join us, if you are seeing this!
